Twitter will restore suspended accounts after new owner Elon Musk ran a poll about offering “general amnesty.”

“Should Twitter offer a general amnesty to suspended accounts, provided that they have not broken the law or engaged in egregious spam?” Musk asked his followers on Wednesday afternoon. When the poll closed Thursday, more than 72% of 3 million voters had said yes.

Just as he did with a poll about reinstating Donald Trump, Musk promised to heed the results.

“The people have spoken. Amnesty begins next week. Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” Musk wrote Thursday, using a Latin phrase that means “the voice of the people is the voice of god.”

While more than 15 million people voted in the Trump poll, about one-fifth as many responded in the vote about banned accounts.

It’s unclear exactly how quickly the new policy will be rolled out, given that thousands of Twitter employees appear to have been fired or left the company since Musk’s takeover.

Trump has not used his renewed power to tweet since his account was reinstated. His most recent tweet remains a Jan. 8, 2021, announcement that he would not attend President Biden’s inauguration.

“I don’t see any reason for it,” Trump said when recently asked about returning to Twitter. The former president said he’d stick with the platform he started, Truth Social, despite its smaller reach.

Under Musk’s ownership, Twitter has reinstated comedian Kathy Griffin and podcaster Jordan Peterson, among others.
